De la Vigne au Vin

Viticulture

The 2016 vintage will be remembered as one of the greats, marked by a remarkably hot and dry summer, preceded by a rainy spring. The early-season rains were crucial for replenishing water reserves, allowing the vines to withstand the intense summer heat. Cabernet Sauvignon, planted on well-drained gravel soils, thrived under these conditions, developing rich tannins and a deep color. Merlot, more sensitive to heat, was protected by the clay-limestone soils, which helped preserve its freshness despite the summer sun. This vintage combines power and finesse, a reflection of the resilience of the terroir and the vines.

Récolte

The 2016 harvest began on October 8, slightly later than usual, allowing for full phenolic maturity across all grape varieties. Cabernet Sauvignon performed exceptionally well, with the late harvest promoting the development of its tannins. The harvest was a careful and patient process, with each plot picked at optimal ripeness. Petit Verdot, known for its late ripening, was the last to be brought in, adding a final touch of spice and intensity to the blend.

Vinification

In 2016, winemaking focused on enhancing the natural concentration of the fruit. Cold maceration was extended to 15 days, followed by a slow, temperature-controlled fermentation at low heat. This meticulous approach preserved the freshness and depth of the vintage, while gentle extraction allowed the tannins to develop smoothly. The team took their time, letting the wine gradually build its structure, resulting in a balanced vintage with great aging potential.

Élevage

The 2016 vintage was aged for 12 months in 225L French oak barrels, with 25% new oak. The combination of fresh fruit and oak aging resulted in a harmonious integration of flavors, with notes of blackberries complemented by hints of vanilla, cedar, and spice. The extended aging process helped soften the tannins while adding complexity and depth, making this a vintage that will continue to improve beautifully over time.
